Understanding profitability for an enterprise has little meaning if:

  • The indirect, infrastructure, overhead and other costs are excluded from the calculation of profit contribution. If the interaction between such costs and business revenues in not understood then losses can multiply despite rapid growth.
  • It is not understood in the context of the product, customer and channel profitability that generate it. Without this understanding it is impossible to focus effort on those that are profit-rich at the expense of those that are profit-weak.
